Political Commentary

The following meme is making its way around Facebook, and I thought it would be awesome to share it:

What I love about this is that it takes the current political viewpoint of hard-core conservatives and Tea Party members and turns it on its head. There is absolutely no way to refute the historical accuracy of the meme--it depicts the first European settlers encountering the Native Americans. Does this mean that those of us that like this meme hate America? Absolutely not. America is truly a great nation; it is a great nation that often falls short of the very ideals that it espouses. This is not a 'blame America' first diatribe, especially since this meme depicts a time prior to America being America. Rather, it's an honest statement regarding what occurred when Europeans first settled this land. The long-term view is that we did, in fact, decimate the indigenous peoples, though unwittingly in some cases (passing on disease to those with no immunity). We extricated the Native Americans, took their land, and marginalized them. Those are simply facts--there is nothing that can be done to whitewash that stain on our history, no matter what convicted felon Dinesh D'Souza says.
